I don't know if you've heard, but shit is going down at UCSD

lilepo:

One of my professors says there is a legitimate threat that race riots will break out or that there will be a full campus lockdown within the next couple of weeks

Well that’s a little unsettling :/

this, right? I’ve heard about it.

I think that was a horrible and incredibly immature party, as well as an example of the perpetuation of ridiculous stereotypes, but I also think that it IS blown out of proportion.

UCSD did not endorse, sponsor, or even remotely affiliate with the party, their only connection being that it was UCSD students who held the party. It’s incredibly offensive, but at the same time aren’t they just exercising their first amendment? They did not hurt anyone (physically), provoke, or endorse violence against any race.

I am NOT excusing them for what they did, or saying what they did is okay, and they do probably deserve some sort of disciplinary action. But, people say offensive, stereotypical things all the time. I’m sure most people, even off-handedly or unintentionally, have also said racially prejudice things as well. Does it make anybody a better person just because their stereotyping was done subtly as opposed to explicity (going to that party)?

I think they can suspend, punish, or do whatever they want to those party attendees, but it won’t change their mind. If they want to make a difference, they have to make them understand that what they did was hurtful and offensive.

so i basically rewrote my entire group’s paper because the “first draft” was just not good, and then i emailed it back for “revisions” (but really they didn’t have to touch it) and one group member just turned it in without telling me what changes she did.

OH GOD MY GRADE
